A slash proof vest or stab proof vest is a piece of body armor, worn under or over other items of clothing, designed to resist knife attacks to the chest, back, and sides. Slash proof vests are different from bulletproof vests. Bulletproof vests offer protection against firearms but provide little or no protection against stabbing with sharp-tipped objects such as knives. Here are a few things to consider when choosing slash-proof body armor.
- The Range of Object Protection
If you see body armor for sale, you should consider whether it offers protection against knives and sharp objects. Stab proof vests are designed to avoid serious harm by limiting knife penetration to a great amount. Needle-resistant vests are also slash-resistant. Additionally, the vest will deflect screwdrivers, needles, knives, and ice picks. Be sure that your vest can stop all these different objects. This particularly for paramedics, supervisors/bouncers, security personnel, traffic wardens, environmental wardens, and anybody else who may be at risk wear stab proof vests.
- Stab-Proof Certification
Before buying a stab proof body armor for sale, consider whether it has the necessary certification. Before a stab-resistant vest can be sold, it must be tested in a professional laboratory using specialized equipment for such vests. Typically, this is performed by a machine. The machine will drop a knife blade with a particular amount of force against the vest. The first force exerted on the vest will be 24 joules. At a pressure of 24 joules, the blade should not penetrate deeper than 7 millimeters. The highest force that may be applied is 36 joules. At a pressure of 36 joules, the blade shouldn’t penetrate deeper than 20 millimeters. This examination will be repeated multiple times for both pressures.
- Consider the Expiration Date
When looking out for slash-resistant body armor for sale, one of the most often asked questions is whether the vests have an expiration date. Due to the exoskeleton slash/stab vest’s usage of aluminum instead of aramid fiber, the material has no expiration date. With appropriate maintenance, the vest should last five years. Before each usage, a stab vest must be thoroughly inspected for signs of damage, such as tears, burns, and creases.
